A Christmas tale.. Part I
On a blurry-eyed Christmas night, an inspired tale...
For some people, Christmas shines a giant festive spotlight on the things that are not warm and fuzzy, on people that should've been by their side. It's no Norman Rockwell soft, snow-covered picture, it's more dysfunctional Norman Bates.
She sat alone, deep in thought. Christmas came a little too early this year. She wasn't prepared for the season. It felt more like a time to reflect than a time to celebrate. She decided to take a walk.
She understood why some chose to fly far away to foreign places, why they chose to be away from the familiar - bcos they remind you of what your life actually is made of, and the things that you wish were right. Perhaps they've hoped since a tender age, that Christmas would sprinkle some of its magical fairy dust on just that one day, and all would truly be right with the world; but it never did quite happened.
As she shuffled along the sidewalks, she thought of him. Her reason to smile. Her love. She thought of his eyes and their intensity, the thought still made her smile to herself. And for a moment, she felt Christmas in her heart. He inspired her to depths she's not been to in a long while. He'd opened her eyes to beauty that can only be seen with the heart's eyes. In his sphere of influence, she felt like she could be anyone, do anything and most of all, she was made beautiful. He made all the minutiae beautiful. Even minor people like her. Colours came alive when he walked with her.
And she walked on, in quiet solitude, listening to sounds of Christmas, gazing upon the heavy-laden Christmas trees in fire-lit homes. In silent soliloquy. For a moment, she let herself love him. She turned a bend, a solitary car whizzed by. Still she walked. It was a long way yet from home.
Love, was never about having. She knew that you loved the longest, when you loved without being stubborn. Love was never about how long you've known someone. It was his soliloquy in the back of a taxi cab that moved her. In that instant, she'd found her second soul mate. And she was amazed. For this, she was content to love from afar. For this, she was content to live with the memory of him, without the selfishness of possession. For indeed, he made her very heart smile, without so much as a word. It was just the realization, that there is another, who would understand her, beyond the boundaries of grammar. Beyond all boundaries of this world. In all honesty, it did help that he is a beautiful creature. He was perfectly formed, from the tilt of his nose, to the parted curve of his lips; from his proud cheekbones, to the beautiful depths of his eyes that saw one's soul. And he would deny it. He was proud, he was humble; he was brilliant, yet still human and fallible; he knew all, yet he knew nothing. He was a bundle of contradictions that piqued her curiosity to no end. Suspecting that with each discovery, lay yet more depths to be uncovered.
She looked up, she was lost. She had wandered.
